Ann Demeulemeester is a Belgian designer who studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and founded her eponymous label in 1985 with her partner Patrick Robyn. She belonged to the "Antwerp Six", the wave of Belgian designers who presented in London in 1986 and reshaped the city into a fashion capital, and became known for dark, poetic tailoring built on asymmetry, draping and a recurring rock-and-roll sensibility, including her long collaboration with Patti Smith. This shirt's quiet ruching and its honestly disclosed broken button fit that same understated, lived-in philosophy.
